Kathmandu [Nepal], August 27 – Nepal’s devastating floods have begun affecting neighbouring India with bodies reportedly being swept across the border by floodwaters.
Three bodies were found floating in the Gandak River near Telfal in Nichlaul, India on Thursday according to Indian media outlet Dainik Jagran.
Teams from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Nichlaul Police reached the site and recovered all three bodies from the river. The bodies were identified as those of two women and one man but their identities have not yet been established.
Initial information suggests the bodies were swept into Indian territory by floodwaters originating in Nepal.
Security personnel are maintaining close surveillance along the river and surrounding areas amid concerns that additional bodies or debris could be carried downstream.
Maharajganj District Magistrate Gaurav Singh Sogarwal and Superintendent of Police Shakti Mohan Awasthi also inspected the site on Thursday morning. They directed security personnel and police to remain on high alert and continuously monitor the river’s water level and flow.
Dainik Jagran reported that surveillance has been intensified in Indian areas as the flood situation in Nepal continues to worsen.
