Nepal, South Korea sign pact on technology cooperation

Kathmandu [Nepal], August 21 – Nepal’s International Relations and Global Diplomacy Dialogue (IRGDD) and the Republic of Korea’s Korea Association for AI and ICT Promotion (KIT) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in technology, artificial intelligence, information and communications technology, digital transformation and innovation.

The agreement was signed virtually and is being seen as an important step in advancing IRGDD’s technology diplomacy agenda. It aims to connect diplomacy with emerging technologies, innovation ecosystems, knowledge exchange and economic opportunities while creating a framework for practical international partnerships.

Through its technology diplomacy initiative, IRGDD seeks to promote dialogue and cooperation among governments, diplomatic missions, technology institutions, businesses, knowledge-based organizations and other stakeholders on the opportunities and challenges arising from technological transformation.

Nepal and South Korea have maintained longstanding bilateral relations, with cooperation increasingly expanding beyond traditional areas to include technology and innovation. Nepal has also identified technology as one of the priority areas for cooperation with South Korea.

IRGDD President Ambassador Dr Sharmila Parajuli Dhakal said the partnership would play an important role in advancing the organization’s technology diplomacy agenda. She expressed confidence that it would create new opportunities for knowledge exchange, institutional cooperation and meaningful engagement between Nepal and South Korea.

KIT Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Dr Jeong Ki Kim said the agreement would provide a foundation for practical cooperation and exchanges in AI, ICT, digital transformation and innovation.

The partnership is expected to add a technology-focused dimension to Nepal-South Korea relations and promote a more digitally connected and future-oriented bilateral partnership.
