Trump renews push to restrict US birth right citizenship

Washington [US], August 7 – US President Donald Trump has renewed his effort to limit birth right citizenship by signing two new executive orders weeks after the US Supreme court rejected his previous attempt.

Speaking from the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said the measures should have been implemented years ago and defended his administration’s latest push to tighten citizenship rules.

The first executive order broadens the definition of non-citizen parents whose children would not automatically qualify for US citizenship at birth. Under the new policy, a child born in the United States would not receive automatic citizenship if both parents are non US citizens and one parent is a member of a foreign terrorist organization an employee of a foreign government, has attempted to obtain US citizenship through fraud or misrepresentation or is living in a US territory where federal law does not provide citizenship.

The second order targets so-called “birth tourism” seeking to bar foreign nationals from entering the United States primarily to give birth so their children can obtain US citizenship.

In the first executive order, the administration said it was protecting the country from “malicious foreign actors” accused of exploiting US immigration and citizenship laws. The measures are expected to face renewed legal scrutiny and potential court challenges.
