Ukraine missile strike kills six in Belgorod

Kathmandu [Nepal], August 18 – A Ukrainian missile strike killed six people and wounded four others including a child in Russia’s border Belgorod region the acting governor said on Monday as both sides intensify attacks amid stalled peace efforts.

Belgorod acting Governor Alexander Shuvaev said missiles struck the village of Koloskovo in the Valuysky district about 15 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. He said the attack caused a fire and damaged a vehicle.

The strike came a day after Russian and Ukrainian missile and drone attacks deep inside each other’s territory killed 19 people combined.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities said Russia struck port infrastructure in the Izmail district of Odesa overnight. Fires triggered by the attack were later extinguished.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces hit military facilities at the port including a terminal for military cargo warehouses containing Western equipment and naval drone depots. Reuters could not independently verify the claims.

Russia also said it struck a patrol boat and fuel storage tanks in Odesa. A local official said a civilian Togo-flagged vessel was damaged and four people were injured.

The escalation comes as frontline fighting remains largely stalled and negotiations remain frozen. UN figures show 437 civilians were killed in Ukraine in July the highest monthly toll since May 2022.
