Kathmandu [Nepal], August 24 – The United States has warned countries and businesses trading with Iran that they could face tougher economic sanctions as Washington prepares to announce additional measures against Tehran.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce the new measures at a news conference on Monday. He has described the planned action as the largest financial attack ever prepared against a rival.
Writing in the Financial Times, Bessent said the US is entering the final stage of its campaign against Iran and warned countries cooperating with Iran’s economy and financial system that they would also face the consequences.
He said President Donald Trump had destroyed Iran’s military power claiming that nearly 100 percent of the country’s military factories had been destroyed and its nuclear programme had been ended.
“We are now reaching the final stage,” Bessent said adding that a major economic offensive would begin in the morning.
The warning comes as Washington seeks to increase pressure on Iran’s economy by targeting those maintaining financial and commercial ties with Tehran.
Iran has been under continuous US economic sanctions since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The latest threat signals a potentially broader effort to extend those restrictions beyond Iran and pressure countries involved in its trade and financial networks.
The announcement is expected to provide further details on the scope of the planned measures and the entities or countries that could be affected.
