Xi calls for four principles to resolve Palestinian question

Kathmandu [Nepal], August 25 – Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for four principles to guide efforts to resolve the Palestinian question, which he described as central to the Middle East issue.

Xi made the remarks during talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Beijing on Monday stressing the need for a political settlement, Palestinian-led governance, humanitarian protection and fairness and justice.

He said the two-state solution remains the right direction and urged efforts to restart peace talks between Palestine and Israel with the aim of establishing an independent Palestinian state at an early date.

On post-war Gaza reconstruction and governance of the West Bank Xi said the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine” should be upheld.

He also called on the international community particularly the UN Security Council to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need and help end humanitarian suffering.

Xi said international law must guide efforts to address both the immediate and underlying causes of the conflict.

He reaffirmed China’s support for a comprehensive ceasefire and diplomatic efforts while stressing that Jordan’s sovereignty and security as well as those of other regional countries must be respected.

King Abdullah said Jordan is ready to maintain close communication with China and support de-escalation efforts.
