Assembly session endorses motion over Bhotekoshi flood losses


Kathmandu [Nepal], September 1 – National Assembly (NA), the upper house of the Federal Parliament on Tuesday unanimously endorsed a special motion expressing sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by the recent floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.

National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal tabled the motion before the meeting which was endorsed unanimously.

Through the motion the Upper House paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the disaster and expressed condolences to their bereaved families.

The motion called for intensified rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts for survivors continued searches for people who remain unaccounted for free medical treatment for the injured and scientific management of the bodies recovered from the disaster.

The National Assembly also stressed the need for stronger disaster management and risk-reduction measures in the future.

The motion called on the government to maintain national unity and ensure cooperation and coordination among the three tiers of government, local communities, civil society, the private sector, development partners and the international community during reconstruction efforts.

It also emphasised coordinated efforts to rebuild physical infrastructure damaged by the floods and strengthen preparedness to reduce the impact of future disasters.

The Bhotekoshi and Trishuli floods caused extensive loss of life and property across several districts, with search, rescue, relief and recovery operations continuing in the affected areas.
