Kathmandu [Nepal], September 11 – The 18th BRICS Summit has begun in New Delhi, bringing together leaders and senior representatives from major emerging economies amid renewed tensions in the Middle East and volatility in global oil markets.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi are attending the summit.
UAE Crown Prince Khalid bin Mohammed Al Nahyan and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira are also participating in the meeting.
Security has been tightened across the Indian capital ahead of the summit. According to ANI, citing Delhi Police around 500 CCTV cameras have been installed while multilayered security arrangements have been put in place around the summit venue.
India has previously hosted BRICS summits in 2012, 2016 and 2021. It also hosted a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in May this year.
BRICS currently has 11 full members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The grouping was initially formed as BRIC before South Africa joined in 2010 turning it into BRICS. The first formal BRIC summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009.
