Flood death toll rises to 1,252


Kathmandu [Nepal], September 3 – The death toll from the devastating Bhotekoshi River flood has reached 1,252 while 4,216 people remain missing, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said on Thursday.

According to the authority bodies have been recovered from eight districts with the highest number recorded in Chitwan at 355 followed by Nawalparasi East with 218 and Nawalparasi West with 208.

The death toll includes 177 in Nuwakot, 127 in Rasuwa, 69 in Gorkha, 60 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahun. Some of the recovered remains consist only of partial human body parts.

The authority said 900 people from hydropower projects remain unaccounted for along with 1,558 from Nuwakot, 865 from Rasuwa and 583 foreign nationals.

The missing also include 45 Army personnel, 25 police personnel, 13 Armed Police Force personnel and people associated with customs, immigration, tourism and local government offices.

A total of 11,993 people have been rescued so far while 21,402 security personnel have been deployed for search and rescue operations.

Authorities said 273 foreign nationals have so far been evacuated by helicopter as rescue teams continue operations in flood-affected areas.
