Kathmandu [Nepal], September 8 – Germany is providing nearly 8 million euros in assistance to Nepal to support communities affected by the recent Bhotekoshi floods and contribute to recovery efforts, according to a press release.
The support combines emergency relief, humanitarian assistance and longer-term development cooperation.
Germany is providing more than 5,00,000 euros in emergency assistance through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism at the request of the Government of Nepal. The relief supplies include kitchen sets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, drinking-water equipment and camp beds.
An additional 2,00,000 euros will be provided directly to two civil society organisations addressing urgent humanitarian needs. One project will support pregnant women, new mothers and newborns affected by the disaster while another will support income opportunities for affected households, infrastructure recovery and conditions in displacement camps.
Germany has also mobilised 7.35 million euros through development cooperation with the funds provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ.
The assistance will focus on health and energy including maintaining access to essential health services, energy and water supplies. Germany will also support Nepal’s efforts to strengthen climate and disaster-resilient infrastructure.
Germany said the UN Central Emergency Response Fund has mobilised $2.5 million while the European Union has mobilised 2.5 million euros following the disaster.
