Kathmandu [Nepal], September 8 – Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) president Rabi Lamichhane has described last year’s Gen Z movement as a spontaneous awakening by young people and said political parties must answer the questions raised by the protests.
Issuing a statement on the first Gen Z Shahid Diwas on Tuesday, Lamichhane said the movement was not organised at the call of any political party.
He said young people had taken to the streets peacefully but firmly against entrenched corruption, political divisions, institutional incompetence, restrictions on fundamental rights and a lack of opportunities.
Lamichhane warned political parties and leaders against interpreting or using the movement for narrow political interests.
He recalled the deaths of young people during the September 8-9 protests as painful saying such an incident should never be repeated.
He paid tribute to those killed and expressed support for people injured or traumatised during the movement. He urged the state to provide proper care to affected families comprehensive treatment to the injured and long-term rehabilitation.
Lamichhane pledged that his party would remain committed to the rule of law, equitable prosperity and national dignity saying public anger should be transformed into a force for nation-building.
