Kathmandu [Nepal], September 9 – The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) opened on Tuesday bringing world leaders and diplomats together for discussions on global peace, security, climate change and development.
Themed “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” the session will conclude on September 29 with high-level meetings, observances and the general debate scheduled from September 18 to 28.
The session is chaired by Bangladeshi diplomat and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman.
Addressing the opening session Rahman called for deeper and more effective deliberations on pressing global issues, including peace, security, justice and climate change. He also highlighted sustainable development, human rights, humanitarian concerns, digital governance and reform of the United Nations.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the UN must develop appropriate strategies to confront growing conflicts and crises including climate change, poverty, stalled sustainable development, division and nuclear risks.
Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the UN said the session is expected to promote constructive dialogue and reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to world peace, development, humanity and climate justice.
Meanwhile Nepal’s Mission Chief Lok Bahadur Thapa chair of the Least Developed Countries group, called for stronger global support to accelerate development in the world’s poorest nations focusing on productive capacity, digitalisation, climate resilience, regional trade and social protection.
