Aryal urges global action on climate change

Kathmandu [Nepal], October 7 – Speaker Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal has urged global lawmakers to strengthen action on climate change warning that securing the mountains is essential to protecting water resources, biodiversity and humanity’s future.

Addressing the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Aryal said the August 26 Bhotekoshi flood described as a “Himalayan tsunami” was not merely a disaster affecting one river or country but a warning to the wider world.

He noted that Nepal contributes less than 0.1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions but bears a disproportionate share of climate-related impacts.

Aryal called for stronger parliamentary cooperation on climate conservation, disaster risk reduction, mountain resilience and climate finance. He also argued that countries contributing least to climate change should receive compensation for the losses they face.

He highlighted the Federal Parliament’s focus on inclusive and accountable governance saying it has designated this year for legal reforms and aims to formulate 166 laws.

According to Aryal, the House of Representatives has 35 percent women lawmakers, 51 percent representation from inclusive groups and 37 percent lawmakers below 40.

He said parliamentary cooperation worldwide should help advance people-centred democracy while urging leaders to promote peace, compassion and co-existence.
