Kathmandu [Nepal], October 24 – Former Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari has urged the international community to take Nepal’s demand for climate justice seriously, saying unprecedented natural disasters this year have highlighted the country’s vulnerability to climate change.
Addressing the 2026 Global Governance Forum (Xiong’an) organised by the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs Bhandari called for stronger international cooperation to address climate risks, according to her secretariat.
She said the Himalayas were a shared natural heritage vital to regional water cycles, biodiversity and ecological balance. She stressed the need for cooperation among Nepal, China and India on meteorological data sharing, glacier monitoring, early warning systems and coordinated disaster response.
Bhandari also called for reliable support from the United Nations and international financial institutions urging a global order guided by international law rather than power.
She said the United Nations needed reforms to become more inclusive, representative, transparent and effective in addressing contemporary global challenges.
Highlighting Nepal-China relations she cited longstanding cultural exchanges, Buddhist philosophy and people-to-people ties as foundations of bilateral friendship. She also reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to the One-China Policy.
Bhandari said peace, poverty reduction, sustainable development and collective action were shared international responsibilities expressing hope that the forum would advance a fairer and more inclusive global governance system.
