Goa, October 8 – Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar has died at the age of 75, his son Malhar said. He died at his home in Goa on Thursday morning after being found unconscious and taken to hospital.
Doctors at Manipal Hospital in Goa told India News Agency that Patekar was given continuous CPR for 45 minutes but could not be revived.
Known for his intense performances and distinctive dialogue delivery, Patekar was one of Indian cinema’s most recognisable actors. He won three National Film Awards and worked extensively in Hindi and Marathi cinema and theatre.
Patekar began his film career with “Gaman” in 1978 and gained nationwide recognition with his portrayal of gangster Anna in “Parinda” in 1989 for which he won his first National Film Award and a Filmfare Award.
He went on to play a wide range of characters including soldiers, police officers, politicians, gangsters and villains. His performances in films such as “Krantiveer”, “Khamoshi”, “Agni Sakshi” and “Rajneeti” further established his reputation as a versatile actor.
Patekar also directed “Prahaar” and remained closely associated with theatre throughout his career. His notable stage works included “Purush” and “Hamidabai Ki Kothi”.
He was also known for speaking openly on social and political issues and for publicly expressing his views on governments and their policies.
