Nepal seeks global unicorns through gaming, IT sector push

Kathmandu [Nepal], October 31 – Nepal is looking to strengthen its gaming and information technology (IT) industries to help domestic companies expand into international markets and emerge as global unicorns, Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said.

In a social media post on Saturday, Shah said the government would review the necessary regulations and conditions to create a more favourable environment for game development and IT businesses.

Highlighting Nepal’s potential in the gaming industry Shah said internationally recognised games such as Ludo which has recorded approximately 200 million downloads and Callbreak with more than 150 million downloads were developed by Nepali developers.

He said many young people were interested in developing gaming applications. The government had reached out to them to understand the challenges they face and discuss ways to simplify the sector and develop it into an industry.

“We have now begun groundwork to address their concerns,” Shah said.

He added that Nepal’s IT products and exports were in a favourable position and the government would work on simplifying taxes, improving policies and regulations governing international earnings and creating better opportunities for companies to generate revenue and reinvest.

Shah also said the government would support the broader IT and gaming ecosystem through game jams, startup events and hackathons alongside regular consultations with IT stakeholders, Nepal Rastra Bank and the Ministry of Finance.
