Kathmandu [Nepal], October 8 – US President Donald Trump has claimed that failing to award him the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize would damage the reputation of the Nobel Committee.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday two days before the prize is due to be announced, Trump said he had played a role in stopping eight wars and preventing major destruction around the world.
“I’m not praising myself, I’m just stating facts,” Trump said claiming that few presidents had resolved as many conflicts as he had.
Trump also questioned former President Barack Obama’s 2009 Nobel Peace Prize saying Obama received the award within months of taking office despite having accomplished little. The Nobel Committee awarded Obama for his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation and pursue a world without nuclear weapons.
Trump has repeatedly raised the prospect of winning the peace prize since 2018 citing his efforts related to the Korean Peninsula and Syria.
His claim has also drawn attention following a meeting with 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado who gave Trump her Nobel medal during a White House visit. The Nobel Committee has clarified that the prize cannot be transferred, shared or returned to another person.
Other figures and institutions discussed as possible 2026 candidates include Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice and UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese. The committee does not publicly disclose nominees for 50 years.
