Kathmandu [Nepal], October 5 – US President Donald Trump has said threats prompted the removal of American B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Britain.
The Pentagon confirmed Sunday that about a dozen B-1 bombers stationed at the airbase had been moved back to their home bases in the United States.
Speaking to reporters before departing Nebraska on Monday Trump said the aircraft were relocated after officials received information about threats at the base.
“They didn’t just happen to fly out of there. There were some threats,” Trump said, adding that he considered moving the bombers temporarily preferable to provoking an adversary.
Trump claimed authorities knew the identity of those threatening the United States but did not disclose who they were.
British Prime Minister’s office said Monday that RAF Fairford remained secure.
Police had launched an investigation after three suspicious vehicles were reported near the base on September 27. US media reported the incident could have been linked to the bomber withdrawal.
The exact nature of the threats remains unclear.
