The United States is preparing for a possible major military operation against Iran with the Pentagon directing US Central Command to complete necessary preparations, Axios reported citing US officials.
According to the report the United States and Israel could launch a potential attack before the November 3 US midterm elections with another possible window coming before elections in Israel.
US officials said a potential operation could involve large-scale airstrikes targeting Iranian energy facilities, critical infrastructure and nuclear sites. No final decision has been publicly announced on whether or when the operation would take place.
The reports come as rising living costs have become a major concern for US voters ahead of the midterm elections. The conflict with Iran has pushed up gasoline prices with the impact extending to shipping, transportation, air travel and food costs.
A Reuters-Ipsos poll released Monday found that support for President Donald Trump’s job performance stood at 32 percent, unchanged from September.
The survey also showed that the cost of everyday living was the leading concern among Americans when considering their choice in the upcoming elections.
Details about the potential US military action remain based on reports from US officials and media outlets and the timing and scale of any operation have yet to be confirmed.
