Government removes Police Chief, appoints new Inspector General

Kathmandu [Nepal], November 4 – Nepal’s government has removed Dan Bahadur Karki as Inspector General of Police (IGP), appointing him as the Prime Minister’s Special Security Adviser in a newly created position.

A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday decided to establish the post at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to provide security-related advice and consultations to the prime minister, government spokesperson and Education Minister Sasmita Pokhrel said.

The Cabinet also promoted Additional Inspector General (AIG) Dr Manoj Kumar KC to the post of IGP effective November 4 under Rule 41 of the Police Regulations, 2014.

The government said the leadership change was aimed at strengthening the country’s law and security arrangements.

Karki was appointed Nepal Police’s 33rd chief on November 10, 2025 and assumed office three days later. He has now been removed before completing a year in the position.

Karki joined Nepal Police as an inspector on April 1, 1998, and was promoted to AIG in April 2025. Had the 30-year service provision remained applicable, he could have continued as police chief until March 2028.

The newly appointed IGP, KC previously served as an AIG.
