PM highlights festivals’ message of human-animal co-existence

Kathmandu [Nepal], November 7 – Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has highlighted the cultural significance of traditional festivals saying they promote love, mutual respect and coexistence between humans and animals.

In a goodwill message issued on the occasion of Kaag Tihar and Dhanwantari Jayanti marking the first day of the five-day Yamapanchak festival, Shah reflected on the country’s cultural traditions and their relevance to society.

He said the tradition of feeding crows regarded in Nepali culture as messengers of Yamaraj, reflects ancient beliefs in which their calls were associated with the arrival of news or visitors before modern communication systems developed.

Shah also highlighted the tradition of lighting Yama lamps during Yamapanchak which is observed with prayers for the safety, peace and well-being of family members. He noted that Yamaraj is regarded not only as the god of death but also as a symbol of truth, justice and righteousness.

On Dhanwantari Jayanti, he extended wishes for good health and a disease-free life.

Referring to Kukur Tihar observed the following day, Shah said the festival honours dogs’ contributions to security, rescue and other services while encouraging compassion towards animals.

He said the festivals should inspire people to uphold honesty, justice and good governance.
