Nepal Sambat a national pride: PM Dahal


KATHMANDU – Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said Nepal Sambat has been established as the native calendar of Nepal.

During a programme organized by the Nepal Sambat main celebration committee on Wednesday, PM Dahal reminded that Nepal Sambat was recognized as the national calendar when he was the prime minister in 2065 BS.

PM Dahal shared that leftist human rights defender Padma Ratna Tuladhar and poet Durga Lal Shrestha had significant contribution to recognize Nepal Sambat as the national calendar. Shrestha and Tuladhar had spread the knowledge with argument and facts on Nepal Sambat, he added.

“Nepal Sambat is linked to social justice. The role of Newar community is important for officially documenting it,” PM Dahal reiterated. This calendar has also reflected the existing national anthem.

Moreover, PM Dahal viewed the communities which were suppressed for long got rights in the federal democratic republic. The present system is achieved through huge struggle and sacrifice.

According to him, the achievements gained so far must be protected and consolidated.

On the occasion, Nepali Congress leader Prakash Man Singh viewed there is no option but to be united by institutionalizing the rights achieved so far.

Similarly, rights defender Malla K Sundar accused then monarchy of not allowing to disseminate news on Nepal Sambat. It was atrocity, he asserted.

Former ministers Jivan Ram Shrestha and Bhimsen Das Pradhan also underscored the need of unity and hailed the democratic achievements that empowered citizens of all caste and cultures and marginalized people.
