Kathmandu [Nepal], August 20 – Mongolia will ban social media use in schools nationwide from the 2026–27 academic year in an effort to improve students’ online security and reduce screen dependency, Education and Science Minister Luvsannamsrai Enkh-Amgalan said Wednesday.
The ban will also prohibit social media chat groups and pages involving teachers, students and parents the minister said.
The move is expected to change how schools communicate with students and families. Teachers in Mongolia commonly use Facebook groups and chats to contact parents and students share assignments and provide school-related information.
Under the new system, schools will need to adopt alternative methods of communication once the new academic year begins.
Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are among the most widely used social media platforms in Mongolia, according to the minister.
The government’s decision comes as concerns grow over students’ exposure to online risks and prolonged screen use. Officials say restricting social media within schools is intended to create a safer learning environment while reducing students’ dependence on digital platforms.
The new academic year in Mongolia generally begins on September 1.
The education ministry has not indicated that the measure will prohibit students from accessing social media outside school settings. The announced restrictions specifically target social media use in schools and communication groups involving teachers, students and parents.
The policy will therefore mark a significant change in school communication practices when the 2026–27 academic year begins.
