Trump revises 50% additional tariffs on Canadian imports

Kathmandu [Nepal], October 24 – US President Donald Trump has revised the scope of an additional 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian imports exempting some products while adding others to the list of goods subject to the levy.

The changes, outlined in a proclamation signed on Friday and published on the White House website will take effect on October 30.

Under the revised rules plywood sheets, certain paper products, specified machinery and refrigeration equipment, and some crates and boxes used for packaging will no longer face the additional tariff.

However, certain types of valves, carpets, waste products and other specified goods imported from Canada will become subject to the 50 percent levy.

The changes will apply to goods imported for consumption into the United States or withdrawn from warehouses for consumption on or after October 30.

The proclamation said the revisions were intended to address burdens and disadvantages affecting US commerce and were consistent with American and public interests.

The Trump administration has defended the tariffs as a response to what it describes as discriminatory and unfair Canadian treatment of US motor vehicle and parts exports.

Trump announced the additional tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods on August 22. Canada responded by imposing tariffs on an equivalent value of US products from September 8, intensifying trade tensions between the neighbouring countries.
