US to provide Nepal $150 million in disaster response equipment

Kathmandu [Nepal], October 29 – US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Megan Bouldin met with Chief of the Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel on Thursday to discuss bilateral cooperation and American assistance for Nepal’s recovery from the devastating August floods.

According to the US Embassy in Nepal, the meeting focused on the Nepal-US partnership and ongoing US support for disaster preparedness and response.

Bouldin expressed condolences for those who lost their lives in the disaster and extended sympathies to the families of missing Nepali Army personnel.

She also highlighted more than $150 million worth of American-made helicopters, drones and riverboats that the United States is providing to strengthen Nepal’s disaster-response capabilities, the embassy said in a social media post.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin next year. The equipment will supplement $38 million worth of M28 Skytruck aircraft donated by the United States last fall, which have supported relief operations.

The embassy said American technology, equipment and expertise were helping Nepal strengthen its search-and-rescue operations, medical evacuation services and emergency response capabilities.

The assistance is intended to improve Nepal’s ability to respond to disasters, save lives and support affected communities during emergencies.
