Kathmandu [Nepal], October 31 – Nepal and Mauritius have moved forward with plans to recruit Nepali workers through a government-to-government (G2G) system aiming to ensure safe, decent and employer-paid employment opportunities.
Mauritius has agreed to Nepal’s proposal with its High Commission in New Delhi sending a revised draft of a labour recruitment memorandum of understanding (MoU) to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 29.
The proposed agreement aims to expand employment opportunities for Nepali workers in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, tourism and information technology. It also seeks to ensure competitive wages and benefits through cooperation between the two governments.
The revised draft covers government-led recruitment, the selection of skilled and trained workers, recruitment procedures under the laws of both countries, employers’ responsibilities, workers’ rights and welfare and arrangements for workers’ return after completing their contracts.
The initiative follows discussions between Nepal’s Labour Minister Ramji Yadav and his Mauritian counterpart, Mohamed Reza Cassam Uteem in Geneva on June 9. During the meeting, Uteem expressed Mauritius’ interest in creating more job opportunities for Nepali workers and organising an international employment fair in Nepal.
Nepal is preparing to complete the necessary domestic procedures to finalise the revised MoU. If implemented, the agreement is expected to establish Mauritius as another destination for safe and organised foreign employment for Nepali workers.
