Early results showed Democrats performing better than expected dealing a setback to Trump as votes continued to be counted across more than half of US states. In a major Senate contest Democrat Roy Cooper defeated his Republican opponent in North Carolina securing the party’s first Senate victory in the state in 18 years. Democrats also appeared poised to gain several other Senate seats. Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff was re-elected in Georgia strengthening his political standing as a potential presidential candidate in 2028. The elections will determine control of both chambers of Congress. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested along with several governorships. Republicans currently control both chambers. Democrats need 218 seats to secure a House majority and 51 seats for a Senate majority. A 50-50 Senate split would allow the vice-president to cast the deciding vote. Trump has also shown signs of frustration in social media posts as the results unfold.
