Mayors in Kathmandu Valley recommend govt to impose lockdown after Chhath festival

Citing a surge in Covid-19 cases, Valley Municipal Forum asks govt to impose 15-day lockdown immediately after Tihar and Chhath festival to break chain of coronavirus infections

KATHMANDU- The Valley Municipal Forum has advised the government to impose a lockdown in the Kathmandu Valley immediately after the Tihar and Chhath festival to curb the rampant spread of coronavirus in recent weeks.

During a meeting with the Covid-19 Crisis Management Center (CCMC) on Wednesday, the Forum recommended the government to impose lockdown after Tihar to break the chain of Covid-19 transmissions.

The Valley Municipal Forum is an umbrella organization of mayors of all 18 local units in the Kathmandu Valley.

Madan Sunder Shrestha, the secretary of the forum, said that the Kathmandu Valley could go into another lockdown for at least two weeks due to a spike in coronavirus cases in recent days.

According to Shrestha, who is also the Mayor of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality, all mayors present in the meeting urged the federal government to enforce another in the Valley to contain the surge of Covid-19 cases in recent days.

He said that the meeting with the CCMC discussed enforcing prohibitory or stay-at-home orders immediately after the Tihar and Chhath festival.
