Govt to provide Rs 1 million to family of each victim of Soti incident

Injured victims to receive treatment cost

KATHMANDU: The government has announced a cash support of Rs 1 million to the family of those who were killed in the Soti incident.

The cabinet meeting held on Monday decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 1 million to each family of those who lost their lives at Soti of Chaurjahari Municipality in West Rukum after nearly two and a half months. Earlier on May 23, over 60 locals from Soti allegedly attacked Nawaraj BK,18, of Jajarkot, and 18 of his friends who had accompanied him to the village to help him elope his girlfriend belonging to ‘upper caste’.

Six youths have lost their lives in the incident that a special parliamentary committee has termed a ‘premeditated’.

Ganesh Budhamagar and Sanjiv BK from Bheri Municipality-4, Lokendra Sundra Sunar and Govinda Sahi from Bheri Municipality-11 of Jajarkot, and Tikaram Nepali from Chaurajahari-1 of Rukum Paschim were others who were killed in the incident. Similarly, 12 others were injured in the incident.

The government also decided to provide them the treatment cost. According to the cabinet decision, the government will provide the treatment cost for those injured in the incident based on their medical bill.

The UN resident coordinator in Nepal had said the incident was yet another manifestation of the continued prevalence of caste-based discrimination in Nepal.
