Shared commitment a must to consolidate governance system thru poll: PM Deuba


KATHMANDU – Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has stressed the need of shared commitment to improve a system governing the country through the elected people’s representatives by holding civic poll and subsequent provincial and federal elections.

Prime Minster Deuba said so in his address to a programme hosted by the main function committee on the occasion of the 72nd National Democracy Day at Sainik Munch Tundikhel on Saturday.He highlighted the need to accomplish all these elections in a free, fair and fearless environment to strengthen country’s democratic governance system.

Noting that the political revolution waged for the establishment of democracy in 2007 BS was of far-reaching and historical importance in the anal of history, he recalled that the journey of federal democratic republic governance system has been realized today after completing several revolutions on the foundation of the 2007 BS epochal revolution.

PM Deuba asserted that we all Nepali people now are able to live a life with hard-earned freedom and self-dignity as well as enjoy civil rights and liberties by standing on the foundation of 1950s revolution. “General people now have enjoyed the access to all levels and structures of the state. It is also the long-term result of the epochal political revolution of 2007 BS”, he added.

The Prime Minister stressed the need to consolidate the achievements made so far. “Today we have truly become dignified and sovereign citizens of an independent country. Politically the country has made a sea-change. The 2007 BS political revolution along with the people’s revolution of 1990 (2046 BS) and 2006 (2062/63 BS) have spectacular roles behind these achievements”, Deuba added.

He shared that federal democratic republic and inclusive governance has been established in the country while moving ahead on the basis of achievements gained from political revolution of 2007 BS and also spoke urgency of consolidating them.

Prime Minister Deuba opined, “We have become successful to govern the country by promulgating the constitution through Constituent Assembly as aspired by the Nepali people. We have been able to reflect our sentiments and feelings in the constitution. Inclusive development has been envisioned guaranteeing equal opportunity for participation to all by uprooting anomalies propping up in the society like untouchability, racial and gender discrimination.”

Pointing out the need of moving ahead being committed towards democratic governance and system, he mentioned. “The onus of responsibility to realize the dream of the martyrs and build Nepal as envisaged by our ancestors is on our shoulder.” The PM stressed that it was the national responsibility to building an equitable society where entire gamut of political freedom and financial and social rights could be enjoyed.

Saying the country had been facing COVID-19 pandemic at a time when reconstruction and new construction of physical infrastructures damaged by Gorkha earthquake has yet to be completed, he added it had made a huge impact on people’s life and economy.

The government has given priority to vaccination campaign across the nation and huge success has been made achieved to this end, PM Deuba said. “The government has been putting all-out efforts to bring the pandemic under control by expanding and strengthening health infrastructure service and making the country’s economy dynamic, he expressed the belie. “We will be able to return the country to normalcy by overcoming the cusp of COVID-19 soon through coordinated and concerted efforts of all stakeholders”. —
