Government will soon go for vacating SC order related to additional 20 metres criteria on river bank: PM Oli

KATHMANDU –  Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the government will soon go for a vacate over the Supreme Court decision banning construction of structures on an additional 20 metres of the river bank in the Kathmandu Valley.

Receiving a memorandum from a team including Suman Sayami, coordinator of the Valley Roads Expansion Affected People’s Struggle Committee and the River Standard Concern Group today, PM Oli made it clear that the government is eager to address the issues of the local people and the concerned groups.

“We obey the decisions of the esteemed court. Some of the decisions might be faulty due to various reasons. Going for vacate itself is the legal course for correcting the decisions if they are not deemed appropriate. I am confident the Court will acknowledge the grievances of the people and you will get justice,” Prime Minister Oli said on the occasion.

In the meeting with the team held at the Prime Minister’s residence at Baluwatar, the PM further said, “The Nepali culture is one of unity and friendship. Various sorts of elements might be at work to disturb our culture and civilization. We should make our national unity and existence stronger. Some elements without any roots might destabilize the spirit of national unity. We all should be conscious of this.”

A Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor-level decision, on August 8, following the release of the full text of the Court’s order, issued a notice not to construct structures on additional 20 metres of land alongside the rivers.

The Struggle Committee has demanded to review the Court’s order and not to implement the Mayor’s notice, citing that hundreds of thousands of people would be displaced and their property would be insecure when the order and notice are put into implementation.
