Parliamentary committee endorses research report of Nepal Bal Sangathan

KATHMANDU – The parliamentary Women and Social Welfare Committee today passed its research report on Nepal Bal Sangathan (Nepal Children’s Organization), Naxal, Kathmandu today. The report was prepared after conducting on-site visits and study on the state of the children in state-run orphanage.

The report was prepared and endorsed following repeated field visits and monitoring in coordination of the Committee’s Chair Nirudevi Pal after the Committee received complaints regarding the ineffectiveness of the Organization that was established in 1964 AD to provide residential care to vulnerable children.

The organization which is to work for the welfare of the children and protect their rights faced slew of criticism and complaints for its inability to optimize its resources and to safeguard the rights of the children at risk.

According to the report, the Organization currently houses a total of 85 children who were rendered orphan or abandoned by their parents. Altogether 10 Children Shelters were running across the country where 378 such children were accommodated.

The Organization which has its fixed assets in 76 districts across the country but in lack of proper record and registration, those assets were being used by other government agencies, the report said.

A seven member ad hoc committee led by Bidya Upadhyay Neupane was formed by the incumbent government last year to overhaul and reform the Organization.

The Committee has been overseeing the management of the Organization and has observed some good changes regarding the food, accommodation, teaching-learning and caring of the children in the Organization.

All the school-going children in the Organization are studying in the Durbar High School in Kathmandu as per the government’s policy of equal education for all.
