Nepal orders mandatory registration for online businesses

Kathmandu [Nepal], August 18 – Nepal’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies has directed all businesses selling goods and services through electronic and digital platforms to register with the authorities before operating.

The ministry’s Electronic Commerce, Science and Information Technology Division issued the notice following the implementation of the Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce) Act, 2024 and E-Commerce Directive, 2025. The ministry urged businesses to complete the required legal procedures.

Under the law, businesses selling goods or services through websites, mobile applications, software, the internet and social media marketplaces are classified as e-commerce businesses.

The ministry said such businesses must establish an electronic platform and register through the relevant department’s online portal before starting commercial activities.

The directive comes amid growing complaints of consumers being misled or defrauded through digital platforms and payment systems, as well as the sale and distribution of substandard goods and services.

The ministry urged all businesses and stakeholders involved in online commerce to complete the registration process and comply fully with existing laws.

It warned that businesses found operating without registration or through illegal electronic platforms could face strict legal action under the Electronic Commerce Act and other applicable laws.

The government said the measures are aimed at making Nepal’s rapidly expanding digital marketplace more accountable and protecting consumers from online fraud and poor-quality services.
