Nepal invites India’s Lok Sabha speaker as parliamentary ties take centre stage

Kathmandu [Nepal], July 9 – Nepal has extended a formal invitation to Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to visit the country, as both sides signalled a renewed push to deepen parliamentary engagement and strengthen broader bilateral ties.

The invitation was conveyed by Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal during a courtesy meeting with Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava at Singha Durbar on Thursday.

During the meeting, Aryal said the government had completed its first 100 days in office and thanked the Indian government for its support during Nepal’s recently held elections.

Highlighting the foundations of Nepal-India relations, Aryal said the partnership is rooted in shared civilisation, geographical proximity and deep socio-cultural ties. He stressed that bilateral mechanisms focusing on trade, security, civil aviation, water resources and connectivity would further strengthen relations between the two neighbours.

The Speaker also underscored the importance of expanding connectivity through air links, railway networks and cross-border bus services, expressing hope for continued cooperation in these sectors.

Aryal said he had invited Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to visit Nepal and added that he looks forward to welcoming him at a mutually convenient time.

Responding to the invitation, Ambassador Srivastava said Birla is interested in visiting Nepal. He also invited Aryal and Nepali lawmakers to visit India to observe and study India’s parliamentary practices.

The Indian envoy said parliamentary diplomacy and sustained high-level political dialogue remain key pillars of Nepal-India relations. He reiterated India’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Nepal in trade, connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people exchanges.
