Kathmandu, July 17 – Heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Nepal on Friday as active monsoon conditions continue across the country raising the risk of floods, landslides and debris flows the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) said.
The Meteorological Forecasting Division said monsoon winds remain active nationwide with the monsoon trough positioned slightly north of its average location in western Nepal and close to its normal position in the east. These conditions are expected to trigger widespread rainfall throughout the day.
The department said the country is generally experiencing cloudy weather. Moderate rainfall is already occurring at some locations in the hilly districts of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces as well as isolated areas in the hills of Koshi, Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are forecast for many hilly areas and isolated parts of the southern plains while snowfall is also possible at some high-altitude Himalayan locations. Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in the hilly regions and Himalayan areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali provinces as well as parts of the Lumbini plains.
Similar weather conditions are expected to persist overnight with continued chances of thunderstorms moderate rainfall and snowfall in the higher elevations.
The DHM has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert warning that intense rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides, soil erosion and debris flows. The adverse weather may also disrupt daily life, agriculture, healthcare services, tourism, mountaineering activities and both road and air transportation.
Authorities have advised people particularly those living in high-risk areas, to follow weather updates and take necessary precautions as the monsoon remains active.
