Kathmandu [Nepal], July 28 – The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has announced the suspension of outpatient department (OPD) services at hospitals and health institutions across the country on Tuesday in protest against attacks on doctors and healthcare workers in Birgunj.
The nationwide protest follows a violent assault on doctors and medical staff at Narayani Hospital and alleged mistreatment of health workers at the Parsa District Administration Office. Emergency services will continue to operate while all non-emergency services at government, private and community hospitals will remain closed.
In a statement issued on Monday the NMA demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the attack including the assault on Dr. Pramod Ram who sustained serious head injuries. The association called for strict legal action against the perpetrators under Nepal’s Health Worker and Health Institution Security Act, 2009 (First Amendment, 2022).
The association also urged the government to take the action against the Chief District Officer of Parsa and the district police chief accusing them of insulting the medical profession.
Describing the incident as an attack on the safety and dignity of healthcare workers the NMA said the nationwide shutdown of non-emergency services was intended to protest what it called state repression against doctors and health personnel. It warned that stronger protests could follow unless those responsible are held accountable and the safety of medical workers is ensured.
