Kathmandu [Nepal], July 30 – Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Thursday appealed for calm and national unity following deadly violence in the eastern Terai, saying the government is “fully serious and sensitive” to the unrest in Sunsari and Siraha districts and is committed to restoring peace.
In an address to the nation, Shah paid tribute to Jay Prakash Mehata, Om Prakash Mehata and Ganesh Yadav who were killed in the recent incidents and expressed condolences to their families. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured saying all health institutions had been instructed to ensure prompt treatment.
Describing the situation as a critical moment, Shah urged people not to blame entire communities for isolated incidents or seek revenge elsewhere in the country. He reaffirmed that Nepal’s Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to practice their religion, culture and traditions and said the government would uphold those constitutional protections.
The prime minister said all security agencies had been mobilized to restore normalcy while the Home Ministry had formed an investigation committee to conduct a fair and transparent inquiry. He pledged that anyone found responsible would face legal action.
Shah said the Home Minister accompanied by senior security officials had travelled to the affected areas to assess the situation and engage with local communities. He added that the National Security Council had reviewed the country’s security situation and taken necessary decisions to maintain law and order.
Calling on citizens to reject rumours and unverified information circulating on social media, Shah urged the public to rely only on official sources. Stressing that no religion promotes violence or hatred he appealed to political leaders, civil society, religious groups and the media to help preserve peace, social harmony and national unity.
