Nepal imposes curfew in Janakpur amid unrest

Kathmandu [Nepal], July 31 – Authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in Janakpurdham and surrounding areas of Nepal’s Dhanusha district on Thursday after protests intensified prompting security concerns and efforts to restore public order.

The Dhanusha District Administration Office said the curfew came into effect at 3:30 pm local time and will remain in force until further notice. The order was issued under the Local Administration Act, 2028 following a decision by the District Security Committee based on an assessment of the evolving security situation.

Chief District Officer Prem Prasad Luitel said the measure was necessary to prevent hooliganism and maintain peace and order as demonstrators became increasingly active across the district from Thursday morning.

Authorities have urged residents to comply with the curfew and warned that legal action will be taken against anyone violating the restrictions. The administration said the temporary measure is intended to prevent further escalation of tensions while security agencies work to stabilize the situation and ensure public safety in the affected areas.
