Janakpurdham [Nepal], August 2 – Nepal’s government and the Hindu Samrat Sena reached a 19-point agreement on Sunday, prompting the religious group to withdraw its protest programmes after negotiations led by Home Minister Sudhan Gurung.
The agreement was reached following a 90-minute meeting between the government delegation and representatives of the Hindu Samrat Sena at a hotel in Janakpurdham.
The deal expands on a 13-point charter of demands submitted by the Joint Hindu Front on Saturday, with six additional points incorporated during the talks.
Krishna Sanatani, vice-chairman of the Hindu Samrat Sena said the government had responded positively to the group’s demands and assured them that measures would be taken to implement the agreed provisions.
Under the agreement, individuals arrested during the recent protests will be released and legal proceedings against them will not move forward. The government has also agreed to investigate the firing by security forces during the demonstrations and will take action against those found responsible.
Speaking to reporters after the talks Home Minister Gurung said the government had accepted all 19 points of the agreement and would begin implementing the commitments made during the negotiations.
Following the deal, the Hindu Samrat Sena announced the immediate withdrawal of all protest programmes bringing an end to its latest agitation after reaching an understanding with the government.
