Kathmandu [Nepal], August 4 – Nepal’s lawmakers on Tuesday called for a judicial inquiry into recent unrest in Sunsari and the Tarai-Madhesh region urging the government to ensure an impartial investigation and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Speaking during a meeting of the House of Representatives, several members pressed the government to disclose the facts surrounding the disturbances and hold those responsible accountable.
Lawmaker Bharat Bahadur Khadka demanded a fair investigation and asked the government to brief Parliament on the developments. He also urged authorities to adopt measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Dr. Amaresh Kumar Singh praised Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane for their roles in addressing the recent unrest. However, he accused authorities of ordering the use of live ammunition during protests in the Tarai-Madhesh and called for an end to the practice.
Other lawmakers raised a range of public concerns. Shraddha Kunwar and Ankita Thakur highlighted shortages of rabies vaccines in government health facilities, while Kunwar also urged immediate action to address concerns over cooking gas supplies.
Prem Lal Chaudhary sought government intervention to repair landslide-damaged roads in Ilam and Ambika Devi Sangroula said victims’ families from a bus accident in Bardiya were still awaiting justice.
Indira Rana Magar urged the government to honour late mountaineer Nirmal Purja as a national luminary following his death on Pakistan’s Broad Peak.
