Heavy rain blocks major highways across Nepal

Kathmandu [Nepal], August 16 – Heavy rainfall has disrupted road transport across several parts of Nepal with landslides and mudslides blocking or restricting traffic on major highways, according to police.

As of Sunday morning traffic disruptions were reported in Kavrepalanchok, Ilam, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Rukum West, Sankhuwasabha, Lamjung, Mustang, Rolpa and Chitwan.

Authorities have restricted vehicular movement along the Khurkot-Nepalthok-Katunjebensi section of the BP Highway in Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli from 6 pm to 4 am daily to reduce the risk of accidents and flooding. Traffic resumes during daylight hours.

Several major routes have also been severely affected. The Mechi highway in Ilam has been completely blocked by mud while landslides have disrupted the Araniko highway in Sindhupalchok and the Trishuli-Mailung-Safrubesi road in Rasuwa.

The Jajarkot-Dolpa road in Rukum West and the Besisahar-Manang road in Lamjung have been blocked by landslides. The Beni-Jomsom road in Mustang and the Prithvi Highway at Ichchha Manakamana Rural Municipality-5 in Chitwan have also been completely closed.

The disruptions have affected travel across multiple regions as authorities continue to monitor road conditions.

Police have urged travelers to check the latest road updates before starting journeys and exercise caution particularly in areas vulnerable to landslides and flooding.

Authorities are continuing efforts to assess and manage the affected routes as heavy rain persists.
