Kathmandu [Nepal], August 28 – US President Donald Trump has pledged to provide Nepal with “any help that they need” following the devastating Bhotekoshi flash floods that struck the country on Wednesday, NBC News reported.
Trump said the United States had contacted Nepali officials and offered assistance as rescue and recovery operations continue in the flood-hit areas.
“We’ve called Nepal and we’ve offered any help that they need” Trump was quoted as saying by NBC News. He also acknowledged that a number of Americans remain missing following the disaster.
The statement came as authorities in Nepal continued search and rescue efforts across areas affected by the sudden flooding, which has caused widespread loss of life and damage.
Earlier on Thursday the US State Department announced $5,00,000 in assistance for communities affected by the floods, according to the US Embassy in Kathmandu.
The funding will be provided through a global award with Catholic Relief Services and will support emergency shelter, relief supplies, and water, sanitation and hygiene assistance.
The US assistance comes as Nepal continues to respond to the disaster and search for people still missing, including American nationals amid ongoing recovery operations in affected areas.
