Kathmandu [Nepal], August 29 – The European Union has allocated €2 million in humanitarian aid to support victims of the devastating flash floods in Nepal.
The emergency funding will help meet immediate needs including food, healthcare, clean water and sanitation the EU Delegation to Nepal said in a statement on Friday.
EU-funded partners have already begun providing assistance on the ground including distributing pre-positioned shelters and relief supplies following the disaster.
The latest aid comes in addition to nearly €3 million in humanitarian assistance allocated to Nepal earlier this year for disaster preparedness.
The EU is also deploying its Rapid Response Coordinator for Asia to help coordinate its response to the disaster and support ongoing relief efforts.
To assist Nepal’s local response the EU has activated the Copernicus satellite service which will provide maps of areas affected by the floods.
The flash floods have caused widespread destruction in northern Nepal with rescue teams continuing search and relief operations in affected areas.
The EU said its assistance is aimed at helping communities meet urgent humanitarian needs while supporting efforts to respond to the disaster.
