Kathmandu [Nepal], August 30 – The Nepali Army has transported excavators and bulldozers to Battar in Nuwakot to support the rescue of people stranded at the upper Trishuli-3 ‘A’ Hydropower Project in Rasuwa following devastating floods.
The heavy equipment was dismantled into smaller sections at Battar and is being airlifted by helicopter to the hydropower project site, according to the Nepali Army.
Army personnel and other rescue teams have been working around the clock to reach people affected by the floods.
The army said rescue efforts continued despite another major flood hitting the project area last night.
At the project site, teams are currently working to open the tunnel entrance through a process known as a “breakthrough.” The army expects the work to be completed within about an hour.
Search and rescue operations for people believed to be trapped inside the tunnel will begin once the entrance has been opened, the army said.
The upper Trishuli-3 ‘A’ Hydropower project is located in Rasuwa one of the districts severely affected by the floods that swept through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
The deployment of heavy machinery is aimed at clearing access and enabling rescue teams to reach the tunnel area as quickly as possible amid difficult terrain and continuing flood-related challenges.
