Flood death toll surpasses 900, 4,227 missing


Kathmandu [Nepal], August 31 – The death toll from the devastating Bhotekoshi river flood in Rasuwa district has surpassed 900 with 903 bodies recovered as of 9 am Monday, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

A total of 4,227 people remain missing while 10,451 people have been rescued from the flood-affected areas, the authority said.

The floods have left 267 people injured. Of them 156 have been discharged from hospitals after treatment while the remaining injured are receiving medical care.

Unidentified bodies recovered from the disaster have been kept at 21 hospitals across different districts as authorities continue efforts to establish their identities.

A total of 20,819 security personnel have been mobilised for rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations in the affected areas, according to NDRRMA.

The deployment includes 8,722 personnel from the Nepali Army, 7,894 from Nepal Police and 4,203 from the Armed Police Force.

Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations in areas affected by the floods while efforts are also underway to identify recovered bodies and trace those still missing.
