Kathmandu [Nepal], September 1 – South Korea will send a 44-member emergency relief team to Nepal to assist search and rescue operations following the devastating floods in Rasuwa district.
The decision was taken after Nepal requested South Korea’s assistance for search and rescue efforts in the flood-affected areas, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The Korea Disaster Response Team will be led by Lee Kyu-ho, director-general for development cooperation at South Korea’s Foreign Ministry. The team includes officials and personnel from the Foreign Ministry, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the National Fire Agency.
The team is scheduled to leave for Nepal this evening aboard a South Korean military transport aircraft.
South Korean media reported that the team will remain in Nepal for around 10 days and support ongoing search and rescue operations in areas affected by the floods.
South Korea had already dispatched a rapid response team to Nepal to search for nine South Korean nationals who went missing at hydropower projects following last week’s devastating floods.
The South Korean team has already begun aerial search operations over areas where the missing nationals are believed to be located.
The floods caused widespread destruction across Rasuwa and other parts of Nepal prompting international assistance for rescue and relief operations.
