Parties meet to coordinate post-flood recovery

Kathmandu [Nepal], September 1 – Political parties will hold an all-party meeting on Tuesday to discuss ways to strengthen rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts in areas affected by the devastating Bhotekoshi floods.

The meeting will begin at 2 pm at the parliamentary party office of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Singha Durbar, according to RSP spokesperson Jagadish Kharel.

The meeting will focus on the damage caused by the floods, search and rescue operations for missing people, relief assistance for affected communities and measures to better organise rehabilitation efforts.

An earlier all-party meeting held after the Bhotekoshi floods and landslides had adopted a 10-point common commitment focused on long-term disaster management and preparedness.

Under that commitment the parties had agreed to establish a high-level all-party mechanism to seek long-term solutions to disaster management, reconstruction and risk reduction rather than limiting efforts to immediate relief.

Tuesday’s meeting is also expected to discuss the process of forming the proposed mechanism. The parties will consider a structure to provide the government with continued recommendations and oversight on post-disaster reconstruction and climate adaptation, the RSP said.

The meeting comes as search and rescue operations continue in flood-affected areas with authorities working to locate missing people and provide relief to communities affected by the disaster.
