The airport welcomed its inaugural international flight from Copenhagen on Thursday carrying 169 passengers including Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Finance Minister Peter Hummelgaard. Nielsen described the airport as one of the biggest investments in Greenland’s history saying a stronger economic and business foundation was essential for the island’s eventual independence. Home to around 56,000 people, Greenland has long relied on fishing and is seeking to diversify its economy through tourism. Ilulissat, known as the “City of Icebergs” is among its most popular destinations attracting visitors with iceberg cruises, icefjord excursions and sled dog tours. The new facility follows the opening of an international airport in the capital, Nuuk in late 2024 expanding Greenland’s international air connectivity. Comments 0 Share your view on this story.
