Washington- US Presidential candidate from the Democratic Party, Joe Biden has announced on Tuesday that he has picked California Senator Kamala Harris as his pick for Vice President
Harris will be the third woman— however the first of African-American and Asian-American descent— to run for the Vice-President’s Office. She is also the first African-American woman in the US Senate from California and had competed for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. However, despite being a frontrunner at the beginning of her campaign, she was out of the race by the end of the year.
Harris is a former California State Attorney General and a former San Francesco district attorney. She became popular as a liberal activist for her intensive questioning of Trump administration officials and appointees.
“She is more than prepared for the job. She’s spent her career defending our Constitution and fighting for folks who need a fair shake,” former US President Barack Obama tweeted. “This is a good day for our country. Now let’s go win this thing.”
Kamala Harris is the daughter of immigrants—a Jamaican born father and Indian born mother. As a critic of Trump’s Immigrant Policies, Harris had advocated for immigrants and raised her voice against Trump administration’s deportation policy against DREAMers, undocumented immigrants who had entered the US as children.
“Joe Biden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals,” said Harris, after the announcement on Tuesday. “ I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”
The 2020 US Presidential Election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
