UML 10th National Congress: Election process starting from 8 am today


CHITWAN – The election process is to start from 8 am today for the election of the party’s new leadership under the CPN (UML) 10th National Congress underway here in Sauraha.

The party’s Central Election Commission has made public the election schedule along with revision. Before this, the election time-table aiming to complete tasks like publishing the voter list and candidacies which was published on Sunday night itself was amended immediately.

As per the latest election schedule, the candidates would be handed the application forms from 8 to 9.20 am and the registration of candidacy done between 8 am to 9.30 am today. The preliminary name list of the candidates would be published at 10.30 am, Chief of the Election Commission Bijaya Subba said. The time for filing complaints against the candidates is between 10.30 am to 10.45 am while the complaints would be examined and a decision taken on them at 10.50 am.

Likewise, those candidates wishing to withdraw their candidacy can do so between 11.55 am to 12 noon. The final name list of candidates would be published at 12.5 and the voting would start only from 9 in the evening. The time for casting votes is until 3am of Tuesday. The counting of votes would be immediately started with the conclusion of the voting.

The National Congress had given the responsibility of making efforts to elect the party leadership from the central committee to the office-bearers to party Chair KP Oli. Accordingly, Oli presented the names of proposed office-bearers and central committee members on Sunday night. He had read out the names of 19 office-bearers and 301 central members. Oli has added central members by including most of the members of the previous central committee. The National Congress delegates had welcomed the names proposed by Oli with a round of applause.

However, the election process has to be fulfilled to be elected the central committee member. Leaders Bhim Bahadur Rawal and Ghanshyam Bhusal are in favour of election. They have rejected party Chair Oli’s efforts at electing the leadership unanimously. The UML has 301-member central committee including the 19 office-bearers.

Meanwhile, party Chair Oli presented the list of proposed names for the office-bearers and the central committee in the closed session under the National Congress last night. According to this, Chair Oli and Senior Vice-Chair Ishwor Pokhrel have been proposed as the office-bearers. Similarly, the names of Yubaraj Gyawali, Asta Laxmi Shakya, Surendra Pandey, Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’, Subas Nembang and Bishnu Poudel have been proposed for Vice-Chair.

Likewise, Shankar Pokhrel has been proposed for General Secretary and Pradip Gyawali, Prithvi Subba Gurung and Bishnu Rimal have been proposed for Deputy General-Secretary while Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Raghuveer Mahaseth, Chhabilal Bishwokarma, Lekhraj Bhatta, Yogesh Bhattarai, Gokarna Bista and Padma Aryal have been proposed for Secretary.
